Live Looping Performance - Wind You Up by Bernhoft (Cover)
Busting out the ol' Boss RC-300 Loop Station and knocking off those one-person-band cobwebs. And I couldn't think of any better way to jump back in than by re-learning one of my favorite songs, Wind You Up by the Norwegian artist @BernhoftOfficial. I hope you enjoy and I hope this song makes you feel as upbeat as it does me!

For 34 years I've structured my whole world to revolve around the act of making things and being able to do it without compromise. I found this channel while (trying to) learn guitar and laughed out loud at your reaction after your first lesson... because i felt exactly the same when i tried learning guitar 25 years ago. I was constantly comparing myself with others, to the point where simply playing held no enjoyment for me. Now, after all those years and with 2 small kids, i have way less time to play / learn.. but i enjoy it a lot more, because i play only for myself. The part about finding the right balance is absolutely true. The thing about finding your audience as well. Its impossible to please everybody. And if you feel like taking some time off, spending time with your family or other jobs, then that has to be ok.

When I started learning there was a cafe in my town that hosted an open mic every Friday, with free guitar lessons and a blues jam every Sunday. It was like a giant musician hangout with couches etc, and I got so much inspiration from watching other guitarists. When that place closed down (and turned into a bank of all things) I tried to replace it with online learning, got bored and fell into the trap of everything being too easy or too hard. It took most of 10 years before I picked my guitar up again. Never really even learned to solo. I got myself a loop pedal recently and once I find time to learn to use it properly, my plan is to experiment over some of the chord progressions I've come up with over the years and maybe actually learn to improvise a bit.

Backing tracks in all sorts of keys, chord progressions, time signatures, and tempos. And all genres. Then go to town! I’ve been doing this for 30 years and it’s made me a stellar improviser over the years. I learned theory way late. Probably 20 years into playing, and you’re right, it’s boring, dry, and very hard to digest. But I wanted it, and now I understand it relatively well now. I started that theory journey about 12 years ago, and I’m glad I did, because now I can narrow down what I’m actually doing.

I'm only a musician these days to make what I feel is truly a great album, whether people agree or not. My problem is knowing what it feels like to write something I am proud of, something I can never get sick of listening to, which is tough because I'm my worst critic x1000, so anything less feels like a waste of time. I feel like there is enough shitty music in the world I don't want to add to the pile. But I know what I'm capable of so I continue the cycle of self abuse filling trash can after trash can of promise unfulfilled because this is my legacy after I'm gone. Why couldn't I have just taken up darts.

Thank you for making this video I feel the same way as you. I have recently gotten laid off from my awful factory job forcing me to go back to school. The reason I got laid off was because I was putting everything I had into building a music studio where I taught kids how to play instruments and be in bands. We played shows and the kids loved it but the process of building it cost all of my surplus money and I didn't get enough students to make it a full time thing. I have built a plan to go back to college since I am unable to find a new job that's even worth doing and I have had to give up on my endeavors in order to try and support my family but it kills me that the only thing I've ever been good at and that has given something good to the world is dead as well. The guilt eats me for becoming a corporate stooge doing jobs I hate in order just to survive when fulfillment is right there it just doesn't afford food or health insurance and I can't manage to do everything.

The best thing I can say to connect the dots for you here... skip the boring and find the fun. Also, just as the minor pent scale is everyone's go-to, many scales have those perfect feelings and landing points. Once you hit the plateau, guitar learning is about exploring the scales as flavors or colors. You just hear how they sound and paint with them.

Its great to see you again Chris!! I gotta say i know what the burnout feels like or lack of inspiration. At times its hard for me to stay motivated with playing or creating music. Main reasons are because I dont have any friends who play music and/or Family members. But recently a long term friend of mine reached out to me and said he really wanted to learn a song on guitar and he wanted me to teach it to him. And just his excitement alone in me showing him how to do it ignited that spark in me that has long faded away. Thats why i love to watch yours and many other content creators videos because it is the only sense of community I have. Just would like to say thank you for that and working so hard to bring complete strangers to gather to help start conversations. <3

I’m honored to be included in the category of “creators who you get a sense of community from.” :P I think ultimately the more connected we can all feel in sharing our journeys and experiences the better we’ll be for it. Hey Chris, I can relate a lot. I'm a father of a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I played music when I was younger, bass guitar and trombone. When my 2 year old was born I randomly decided to start learning Ukulele. Its been a struggle carving out time to practice, but somehow through it all i've managed to practice around an hour a day for these last two years. Encouraged by my progress, this January I started learning fingerstyle guitar. Its hard but i'm practicing at the end of the day when work is done and the kids are asleep. My brain feels fried by that point, but I still force myself to pick up the guitar and practice, and . . its paying off!

Still love your deeply calm way of talking, just a good vibe. It's hard to accept, when your creative vision is unreachable, especially if you know you could do it under different conditions, isn't it. Capitalism has conquered creativity with the algorithms and stuff. Let's take it back. I just started a 30 day challenge today, to put out 1 video per day, improvising piano and voice. This should give me enough practice to lower my standards and focus on enjoying the process. I saw it coming with your crazy good videos, too, btw. Too much work! Glad you're finding your way.

Thanks for this message, Chris. It really resonates with me. I've been following you since the beginning and admire your skills and style. You've got an honest and compelling message on your channel and video this fits in just right. I'm just getting started with my own channel and everything you said feels true. I've been giving myself constraints to make the most valuable content I can with the skills I have in a limited amount of time (with job, family, and my own musical creative projects competing for that time). What you echoed from Taetro about creating sustainable systems is right on the money. For what it's worth, the true value you give is your message of embracing the suck, self deprecation, and just being human. The high production value is great but, in my opinion, not required (not that I don't desire your video skillset myself 🙂). You've got something to say that the perfection-obsessed world needs to hear. And whether you say it on your channel or focus on things other than your channel, you've communicated it nonetheless. Thanks again, for posting this.

Thank you Eric, that really means a lot 😁. I’m definitely trying to find a new and more sustainable way to interface with this medium. I really do enjoy using video techniques to help tell a story, and it’s fun and challenging, but I also kind of enjoyed just sitting down and talking like this. And it took a lot less effort :P. So maybe I’ll be a little more choosy about what I put serious production time into and do things like this more often. And congrats on starting your channel! I’ll go check it out :). I think if you’re getting started with that structure in mind you’re going to do well in terms of keeping it balanced in your own life 🙌. I wish you all the best!

@@ChrisHayzelmusic badly! My newest idea is to utilize the sampling ability of my sp404MkII and instead of worrying about making songs, I'm just going to start making ingredients to songs. I'll worry about structure later. If it doesn't work, I'll try something else later.

Hey Chris, Just swinging by to say your content is missed, big time. Life's a wild ride, isn't it? It's all about finding that sweet spot, especially with game-changers like parenting entering the mix. Totally understand how priorities shift; juggling creativity with the new parenting gig is no small feat. I'm here, rooting for you every step of the way. Hoping you'll hit that perfect harmony between your creative spark and personal life. And hey, while we're at it, I'm still tuning in for any bits you choose to share, or maybe just to relive some of the gems you've already dropped. Your journey's a shared one for many of us, and your openness is nothing short of gold. Take the time you need. We're not going anywhere, ready to welcome you back with open arms whenever you're up for it. Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers from Portugal!

Thank you 🙏. Truly, that means a lot. Life’s a trip for sure. Honestly I’ve felt bad for being gone for so long, and figuring out a way to address that absence was a big hurdle for me. I’ve really genuinely appreciated the community that’s built up around the small handful of videos that I made last year, and I’m really looking forward to making and sharing more :).
